Useful expressions in the li-ion industry
primary battery:A battery which can only be discharged once
secondary battery:A battery that is intended to be discharged and recharged many times.
positive electrode:The electrode which has a positive potential. Electric current from this electrode flows in the external circuit during discharge
negative electrode:Electric current from the external circuit flows into the cell at the negative electrode during discharge.
rated capacity:The number of ampere-hours a cell can deliver under specific conditions(rate of discharge,end voltage,temperature);
cycle life:For rechargeable batteries,the total number of charge/discharge cucles the cell can sustain before its capacity is significantly reduced
internal resistance:The resistance to the flow of an electric current within the cell or battery
- nominal voltage:The standard voltage used to express the capacity of a particular battery model. It is generally equal to its electromotive force or its approximate voltage during normal operation.
- 1.5 volts per cell for alkaline and carbon zinc
